lyrics
The armenian language has its own letters so for simplicity‘s sake I decided not to print the lyrics. But let me tell you that this song describes the love to a girl – achtschig sirunag means sweet girl – Karekin wrote the music and Kevork Senyar a friend of his the lyrics.
My father recorded this song in our kitchen about 20 years ago with a simple tape recorder. If you listen carefully you may hear my mother shutting the door in the background of the first refrain.
When I was a child he used to play “Achtschig Sirunag” along with songs of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan. It was always the song I loved most, maybe because it was closest to home being Armenian but mainly the melancholy of the melody got me wrapped up in it.
It was a very touching experience for both me and my brother Saro (who sang the second verse) to sing along with my father.
